Meet Barb and Clay Cowan and their Norwich Terriers, Sky and Rex.

Well, here we still are in the house we built 23 years ago at Witt’s End (the Post Office still insists on calling it Witt Road).  Our menagerie has grown and shrunk and grown again over the years, but it always included dogs and kids in varying numbers, with the occasional cat, rabbit, etc. thrown in for good measure.  Many were acquired in the normal way, but a surprising number (including kids) simply arrived on our doorstep looking for shelter.  It’s been an interesting journey…

We have owned a few pure bred dogs in the past, and even began to show a very nice Corgi many years ago, Before Kids.  However, that effort was soon aborted by the arrival of our first-born.  Many years later, with mostly self sufficient kids and a recently departed family dog, we decided we would like to try our hand in the show ring again.  After reading all the literature and visiting a few shows, we settled on Norwich Terriers because we love the terrier spunk, the small size and easy portability.  Also, they’re cute as all get-out.  So after attending more shows and talking to owners, we met James Latuscha, who happened to have puppies with him.  There we met Lasata’s The Sun In Your Eyes (Sky), and the rest is history.  We finished Sky in Sacramento a few years ago.  What Fun!

We currently have two Norwich – Ch. Sky, and Rex (a re-homed character from Carole Foucrault).  They keep their yard clear of squirrels and discourage the resident deer (or try to anyway).  Both dogs enjoy riding in Clay’s Miata, top down of course, and taking long walks. We have dabbled in agility, and earth dog, and will continue to do so; but we think the dogs are way more interested in the lure course on fun days.

Clay is retired and Barb is now semi-retired.  Both of us enjoy Norwich Club events and attending dog shows.   Barb gardens and reads in spare moments.  Now she gets to redefine life as a mostly retired person, but there is always plenty to do.  Clay also reads, fools around on the computer, races around in his car, and plays racquetball.

Oh yes, we also have grown children - a daughter (30) and a son (27).  Our daughter has recently moved to New Zealand to work and travel for a year.  Our son lives at home and is currently searching for work in computer networking and security.  Wish him luck!

Meet Ch The Sun In Your Eyes (Sky)  - 5 yrs old   (below)

Sky loves dog shows and fun days and is always excited to meet and greet all the people and especially other dogs (with the notable exception of Chows).  He always made the judges smile when he leaned forward to greet them and got that supersonic tail going full speed.  He is a brave and friendly soul who is rarely aggressive toward other dogs (except Chows), but quick to reciprocate if challenged.  We don't know why he doesn't like Chows.  He doesn't like vultures either, and barks at them whenever they fly over.  Maybe there's a connection...

Meet Rex - 6 yrs old  (above)

According to Clay, "When Rex came to us, he rarely raised his tail and was quick to drop to the floor in submission.  Happily now his tail makes frequent appearances, he is far less skittish, and he is the sweetest dog you could ever want.  Although he prefers people over other dogs, he gets along famously with Sky and puts up with an amazing amount of harassment."
