In 1989, Kathy Eimil and John Thomas invited Missy to fly out West to judge the Middle Kingdom Alliance fun match. So impressed by the enthusiasm and congeniality of the California Norwich owners she asked if a Pennsylvanian could become a member of their local club. And, according to Missy, "I've been a proud Associate Member ever since".
"Growing up in a terrier family I was quite familiar with the prick-eared 'Jones Terrier' and always enjoyed visits with relatives who owned these popular little hunt terriers. My first Norwich, bred by Sylvia Warren of River Bend Farm was a graduation present from my great aunt. I have owned and bred this wonderful breed under the Terrapin prefix since 1966. Am I really that old?"
Missy became a member of the Parent Club in 1975 and has contributed to that club in many capacities - vice president, board member, AKC Gazette columnist, editor of The News, Delegate to the American Kennel Club - culminating in an Honorary Membership with the former Norwich and Norfolk Terrier Club. A three time Specialty Sweeps judge, her greatest honor was being invited to judge the Montgomery Sweepstakes at the breed's 50th Anniversary Show in 1986.
But while most dog people associate Missy with her writing, her photography and her many Bred by Exhibitor Norwich champions, Missy's "other life" is that of a world traveler. Currently a travel agent and formerly a long time employee of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, she has quite literally sailed the Seven Seas, extensively touring every continent on earth with the exception of Antarctica.
"I doubt I'll ever get to Antarctica, but I'm grateful to have seen so much of this world before travel became such a hassle and such a pain. My last big trip found me in Lebanon at the outbreak of the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War. Hundreds of Americans, myself included, were placed on an emergency cruise ship and evacuated to Cyprus, accompanied by a Navy guided missile Destroyer!!!
I must say, Cyprus was lovely, but boy was I glad when that trip was over. I stay a lot closer to home now."
"Home, after all, is where the heart is, and my heart will always be first and foremost with my Norwich Terriers. I can't imagine life without them."
